The History Behind the Superior Producer

The Superior Producer sank in September of 1977 outside the busy port of Willemstad. The ship was headed towards Isla Margarita in Venezuela. It was filled with alcohol and clothes, which would be used for the upcoming Christmas shopping season.

But because the seas were rough and there was far too much heavy cargo on the ship that ended up shifting out of place, it became impossible for it to stay afloat. Just a little while after the ship set sail the ship began to sink quickly on an even keel.

While this may seem like a tragedy, the people on shore were actually overjoyed because they were able to essentially take everything that they could recover from the cargo on the ship. People donned the clothes and drank up all of the alcohol that did not go down with the Superior Producer.

The story goes that the people who recovered the clothes from the ship gave this to the islanders who really needed it who used the jeans, shirts a for years to come.

The Location of the Superior Producer Wreck

The wreck of the Superior Producer in Curaçao is found sitting upright in about 30 meters, or 100 feet, of water. It is easily found about 60 meters, or 197 feet, off the coast of Otrobanda. It measures roughly 50 meters, or 164 feet, in length, so it is definitely a sight to behold at the bottom of the sea, and as you approach it, you will begin to see its vast shadow taking shape.

The Superior Producer Wreck dive usually is a shore dive Expect to do a surface swim of 5 to 10 minutes before you get to the mooring that is attached to the ship. Since the wreck lies so close to the actual cruise terminal boots are not allowed to get to the dive site.

Diving the Superior Producer Curaçao

The Superior Producer Wreck is really a sight to behold today. Since the year it sank, a variety of marine species have covered it and transformed it into a reef of its own. It is covered in a huge variety of different types of corals and sponges, creating a colorful display that will certainly take your breath away as you approach the wreck during your descent.

Night dives are also available, during which you would need a dive light to really see the colors and the marine life found throughout the wreck, but even during a daytime dive, you may wish to bring a dive light with you, as this tool will allow you to really see into the darkest parts of the wreck and the light will also bring out the true vibrancy of the corals and sponges.

Orange cup corals and orange tube corals, in particular, which can be found covering the wheelhouse of the wreck, are a beautiful sight especially at night, when the wreck literally glows in an orange hue. You can swim to the boom as well, which features lovely purple and yellow tube sponges that stand out against the blue of the deep water.

And barracuda love to spend their time around the bow of the wreck, while blackbar soldierfish can also be found in the wheelhouse.

As you slowly and more closely examine all of the myriad parts of this wreck, you will quickly realize that this has become a truly awe-inspiring underwater habitat. From the tiniest shrimp to the variety of corals that thrive here, nature has certainly been able to transform this ship into a safe haven where marine life can live without fear.

Underwater photographers love this wreck site, whether they are looking for wide-angle shots or they are more concerned with macro photography and capturing the details on the tiniest creatures living throughout the ship’s remains.
